What is File Server Resource Manager ?

File Server Resource Manager is a feature set in the File and Storage Services server role in Windows Server that helps administrators classify and manage stored data in file servers.
This can help to manage and maintain data in your file servers.

Windows File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) enables you to classify your most important and sensitive data in your File Servers. Add the FSRM role from the File & Storage Services in the “Add roles and features wizard”.

Here is the step to use "File Server Resource Manager".

Open File Server Resource Manager in "Tools"

Initial Configuration

Now that File Server Resource Manager is installed on the server, there’s some initial configuration that you’ll need to perform first.

First, open the FSRM administrative tool.

What is File Screeing Management?

  • Create file screens to control the types of files that users can save, and generate notifications when users attempt to save unauthorized files.
  • Define file screening templates that can be applied to new volumes or folders and that can be used across an organization.
  • Create file screening exceptions that extend the flexibility of the file screening rules.

Create new file screens not to allow 7zip, exe, zip, video. Click Create file screen.

Click Browse and give a path to your desired location that you don't want to save  7zip, exe, zip, video. And  the choose "Define custom file screen properties".

I manually create "HlaingRule" as show below figure. You can choose default template if you want.

I give file screen screen path to "D:\DataSvr\ITSystem". Because I don't want to save 7.zip, videos and exe files to my file server.

You can define by saving (mp4, 7zip, zip, exe) files to your data server whether your file screen rule is working well or not.
In the next article, storage reports management and file management tasks will be continued.
